Lyn-CAG Receives Stimulus Funding
To Expand
Its Weatherization Program
Lynchburg Community Action Group. Inc.’s Weatherization Program has expanded its services due to the recent stimulus dollars that have been provided and contracted to twenty-two (22) Virginia Community Action agencies by the Federal government. Not only does this mean an increase in funding for this program but that the eligibility requirements for this program will be expected to expand. The new expansion of eligibility will include the lower levels of middle class families that could not access the services in the past. In order to meet the increased demand and to provide effective service to the Lyn-CAG service area that includes Campbell County and the cities of Bedford and Lynchburg. The stimulus funding has also allowed the agency to hire an additional crew of workers to provide these services.
The services are ideal for all types of families, especially those households that have elderly persons, individuals with disabilities and families with children. The program is for homeowners and renters. The federally funded program uses skilled technicians to:
- insulate attics
- seal ductwork
- seal air-leaks with insulation
- caulking and weather-stripping
- repair leaky heating duct systems
- repair and replace inefficient or unsafe heating
- install carbon monoxide and smoke detectors
- installation of energy efficient lighting
Home weatherization investment is smart federal policy because it pays multiple dividends -- saving energy, reducing housing costs and creating jobs. For every $1 spent, weatherization returns $2.72 in energy and other benefits, according to the Weatherization Assistance Program Technical Assistance Center, a program of the National Association for State Community Services Programs.
